چکیده

As a natural protein, silk has a tremendous demand as textile commodity. However, compared to Bombyx mori silk, commonly known as mulberry silk, the other non-mulberry silks have some drawbacks like coarseness, low draping, wash and wear characteristics etc. which can be changed using chemical treatment. In this study, effects of some highly polar, non-polar and bipolar solvents on fibre of muga silk have been studied in terms of tensile strength. Methanol and Phenol treated fiber showed higher tensile strength than DMSO, Formaldehyde, Toluene, DMF, Benzene, Ethanol and THF treated fibres respectively. Chemical degradation occurs under the action of some chemicals, other agents and distinguishable depending upon the nature of the bond rupture.

The mitochondrial genome of Muga silkworm (Antheraea assamensis) and its comparative analysis with other lepidopteran insects

Muga (Antheraea assamensis) is an economically important silkmoth endemic to the states of Assam and Meghalaya in India and is the producer of the strongest known commercial silk. However, there is a scarcity of genomic and proteomic data for understanding the organism at a molecular level. Our present study is on decoding the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of A. assamensis using ne...

Improvement of Rearing Performance in Muga Silkworm Antheraea Assamensis with Hormone Treatment

Reproductive efficiency of economic insects and its rearing performances are greatly affected by hormonal activities together with the environmental and cultural practices. Two different hormones were selected for tropical application on muga silkworm (Antheraea assamensis Helfer) to study their effect on the overall rearing performances. JH-III (Juvenile hormone) in three different concentrati...

Host Plant Selection by Larvae of the Muga Silk Moth, Antheraea assamensis, and the Role of the Antenna and Maxillary Palp

The importance of olfactory senses in food preference in fifth instar larvae of Antheraea assamensis Helfer (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) was examined by subjecting larvae with only antennae or maxillary palpi after microsurgery to food and odor choice tests. Mean percent consumption, total consumption, and choice indices were used as parameters for drawing conclusions. The foods used were two hos...

PURIFICATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF GLUE LIKE SERICIN PROTEIN FROM A WILD SILKWORM Antheraea assamensis Helfer

Sericin is a hot water soluble glycoprotein and has been partially characterized in the domesticated silkworm Bombyx mori. Contrary to this very little information is available about the sericin of non mulberry silkworms. Sericin is generally a waste product during degumming. Recent advancement in silkworm research has revealed the use of sericin of B. mori as protein based biomaterial involvin...
